Tough Race for Audi
After three
accidents in the Formula 1, Emanuele Pirro
understandably had mixed emotions about racing
the Grand Prix circuit in Hockheim. The
breakthrough happened only last year, when he won
both the STW-Sprint and the Race.
1996
still on Small Circuit
Last year, the
ADAC STW-Cup was still using the small circuit
(2.638 km). 1997 marks the first year, where
Super Touring cars will race the 6.823 km long
Grand Prix circuit.
Despite a few
handicaps interrupting the long straights, the
Hockenheim Grand Prix circuit is still one of the
fastest raceways around. Leading Super Touring
cars exceed speeds of 250 km/h. Based on
statistics of the STW-Cup, only the Austrian
Salzburgring can stand in comparison.
Top-Speed
Most Critical
On the
Hockenheimring, a car's engine performance and
top speed are more critical than curve speed.
Emanuele Pirro thinks that this will be the most
challenging race of the season for Audi. The
permanent all-wheel drive Audi Quattro are known
for their exceptional curve handling, not for top
speeds. Rules requiring extra weight will make
matters only worse.
