Pole-setting #2 Audi to start from back of the grid
Lucas Luhr (Germany) will drive the Team Audi Sport North America #2
R10 TDI alongside Marco Werner (Germany) after IMSA officials advised
Emanuele Pirro (Italy) not to race in today’s Petit Le Mans race.
Pirro, the 2001 & 2005 American Le Mans Series champion, is still
suffering from mild concussion following his high-speed accident at Turn
1 on Thursday morning caused by a left rear puncture.
Although Pirro drove the repaired Audi on Thursday evening and also on
Friday morning, Audi believes that it is in the best interests of the five-time
Le Mans 24 Hour race winner that he does not drive in today’s 1,000-mile
race following advice from IMSA’s medical staff on raceday morning.
Lucas Luhr raced the Audi R10 TDI in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June
and has accumulated many miles in testing during the course of 2007.
He was present at Road Atlanta having been given permission by Audi
Sport to race for Petersen White Lightning this weekend. The 28-year-old
Audi "factory” driver is contesting the DTM this year. Luhr finished 1st in
LM P2 class of the 2006 American Le Mans Series and so has
experience of driving a sports-prototype at Road Atlanta.
The #2 Audi R10 TDI which Marco Werner drove to a record pole-position
time, will now start from the back of the grid.
